Recently, someone asked how to choose the roll film for baby food spout pouches. Actually, there is no material that is the best. The key depends on your sterilization method, shelf life, which market you sell it in, and finally the price.
There are three common structures: PET/AL/NY/PE, PET/AL/NY/RCPP, and PET/AL/NY/RPE. The outer layer is similar, but the one that is really easy to step on is the innermost heat sealing layer.
1. Clarify the structure first
PET is about 12 μ m thick and printing is wear-resistant. AL is about 7 μ m, oxygen blocking, moisture blocking, and light blocking. NY is about 15 μ m, anti puncture and anti drop. The innermost layer of 70-80 μ m is the heat sealing layer and also the layer that comes into contact with food.
Don’t worry too much about the outer layer, choosing the wrong inner layer is the real problem.
2. PE: Soft, easy to seal, do not steam
PET/AL/NY/PE is suitable for cold filling, aseptic filling, and pasteurization. The bag is soft, feels good, and the heat sealed window is wide, making it easy to adjust the machine.
But ordinary PE is not resistant to cooking at 121 ° C. Once the seal is soft, the entire bag becomes useless. If only pasteurization is done, PE is usually sufficient and the cost is low.
3. RCPP: Basic Plate for Steaming and Cooking Line
PET/AL/NY/RCPP is suitable for 121 ° C steaming, hot filling, and long shelf life. High temperature resistance and stable heat sealing.
The disadvantage is that the bag is hard and the cost is high. Steaming and boiling are included in the process, and RCPP is generally given priority. Don’t gamble with PE to save film money.
4. RPE: Clamp in the middle, don’t be a panacea
RPE is a modified polyethylene that is more heat-resistant, rub resistant, and has a more stable seal than PE, but it is not as hard as RCPP.
But whether 121 ° C steaming can be used depends on the data. The heat sealing curve, steaming test, and leakage test cannot be omitted. Suppliers say ‘we can do it all’, don’t believe it.
5. The suction nozzle should be selected first
The problem with the nozzle bag is often due to the failure of the nozzle and film seal.
The film is made of PE, and the suction nozzle is usually made of PE. RCPP is used for membrane, and the suction nozzle is usually equipped with PP type. RPE mostly follows the PE logic, depending on the resin and heat sealing curve.
Confirm before placing an order: nozzle material, size, child proof cover, sealing matching, and drop squeeze leak test. Changing the mold after opening it is very expensive.
6. Determine which sterilization method to choose
Pasteurization at 85-95 ° C: PE or RPE is sufficient.
Hot filling: RPE may have more margin than PE.
121 ° C cooking: RCPP starts.
Aseptic or cold filling: Heat resistance is not important, sealing consistency and clean film surface are more important.
Only doing pasteurization but applying RCPP hard, the bag is hard, the cost is high, there is no need.
7. Compliance: Don’t wait for bulk orders to be replenished
EU review of EU 10/2011 and revisions, including general migration, specific migration, positive list, infant restrictions BPA、PFAS。 Starting from August 2026, the European Union will restrict the intentional use of PFAS in food contact packaging.
The United States confirms whether the resin, adhesive, ink, and nozzle have FDA 21 CFR, FCN, or GRAS.
DoC、 If the migration report, material declaration, and batch traceability cannot be obtained, do not push them towards mass production.
8. Recyclable bags can be viewed, don’t default to replacement
The single material PP bag is now available, and Gualapack has also obtained TerraCycle certification for Gerber’s Pouch5. But the barrier and shelf life usually have to be compromised.
PET/AL/NY/RCPP or RPE is still more stable for 12 months of room temperature or steaming. Recyclability is a bonus, not a default replacement.
9. Send these before inquiring
Sterilization method, shelf life, whether or not to use aluminum foil, selection of PE/RPE/RCPP heat sealing layer, nozzle specifications and child proof cover, target market, compliance document list.
